Literature: Gardeners’ Choice, by Evelyn Dunbar and Charles Mahoney, with a previously unpublished preface by Edward Bawden and with a new afterword by Christopher Campbell-Howes, Persephone Books, London 2015. The plan (on pages 202-203 of Gardeners’ Choice) for a ‘Country Suburban Garden’ derives from one of Mahoney’s horticultural heroes, James Shirley Hibberd, a mid- to late Victorian urban ecologist and garden guru, founder of the still existing magazine Amateur Gardening.

We are grateful to Christopher Campbell-Howes for assistance.
