In 1936 Dunbar and her fellow artist Charles Mahoney, her former Royal College of Art tutor and later lover, were commissioned to write and illustrate jointly Gardener’s Choice, a guide to the cultivation of 40 unfamiliar and unconventional garden flowers. Dunbar’s contribution included a series of vignettes, of which these unfinished sketches are typical. They probably feature the artist’s mother Florence (R) and Dunbar’s sister Marjorie (L). In the event this composition was not used.
